7 Hot Hometowns

Beacon Selected as one of Hudson Valley Magazine’s 7 Hot Hometownshvmag.jpgHudson Valley Magazine’s (registration required) April 2007 issue features Beacon as one of seven of the Hudson Valley’s hottest hometowns—not that we didn’t know that already.Among the reasons the article cited for selecting Beacon were the Arts, Victorian housing stock, revitalized Main Street, and proximity to a variety of outdoor activities.Check the article out, and while you’re at it be sure to vote for your favorite Beacon hot spot in HVMag’s Best of the Hudson Valley survey.

  3. YEah!!!!!! Finally we get recognition for all that is so wonderful about Beacon. Onward and upward!!!! Although the comment about Main Street at midnight is the same ol’ problem for years. Let’s nip it in the bud! FOOT TRAFFIC!

  4. Hi, I just stumbled across this website as I was trying to find more information on the city of Beacon. My husband and I live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan, and we’ve been thinking that we might like to look into moving to Beacon. We’ve been to Beacon several times (mostly to go to Dia:Beacon), and we really love the area. Can anyone give me any advice about whether commuting to Manhattan for work is at all realistic? Also, we’re 28 years old…what’s the social scene there like? Do you find that a lof of people from NYC have moved to Beacon?
Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  5. i was born in beacon a bhs class of 89 grad (still a bulldog at hart),but sadly or for the better i moved from beacon for the open areas of up state ny. who remembers open land on rt 9 before all the box stores and all. it is like that here the local towns remind me some of beacon in the 70’s and 80’s. but i am proude to be from beacon and glad to see it is of note now. went down for a visit was good to see the yankee cliper open and full on a sunday morn. some thing the place never saw under john but in my hart i see the old 30’s era dinner. was good to see beacon with bizzy. but at 37 going on 38 i am happy in a town that is slow that one can see a horse and buggy ride the roads and see working farms and see amish farmers still doing the farm the old way and seeing one room amish school houses. the canajoharie libary has had a world known art colection years before dia heard of beacon and will soon beopening a new one that would have been open alread if not for last years flood. yes beacon is my home town and i miss it and the mountain she took her name from and i miss my family and the albra’s but i have found a place that is a mix that is perfect of new and old. and sad to say i feel more at home here than my home town but beacon will always have a spot in my hart along with the most aware class ever to leave bhs the class of 89.

  6. I’m another Brooklynite who’s been priced out of our wonderful city neighbourhood. We are looking at moving to Beacon and doing the commute into midtown. Can anyone relay their experience of this commute? How long it takes, pros and cons? Thnaks for your advice.

  7. Hi Drew,

I moved up to Beacon in 2002 and have been commuting nearly every day since. The express trains make the commute a breeze — no stops from Beacon to Grand Central means you’re in the city in 72-75 minutes. The trains are almost always on time, and it’s a beautiful ride.

Downsides: Trains are getting more crowded (still, nothing like a subway car) and the bathrooms are nasty. Otherwise, if you can tolerate a 90 minute commute, the MTA has made the Mid-Hudson valley accessible.

  8. Thanks Mike, helpful information.
What is your monthly train fare?

  9. With the subway pass it’s $385 a month (I need that as I work in Chelsea.) Without the subway pass it’s probably more like $315.

  11. I was born in Beacon and grew up there until 1973, when my dad got transferred to Ohio due to his job. I remember a lot about Beacon and am still a Beaconite at heart!! I can’t believe how much it’s grown since I left. The last time I visited was in 1975, when I graduated. I still miss it to this day and do keep in contact with several friends who live there still. I’m so glad I found this paper while searching and will be able to keep up on all things Beacon!!
